Ultra-pure water (UPW) is typically defined as water with a resistivity greater than 18 MΩ·cm (up to 18.3 MΩ·cm at 25°C), in which conductive ions are almost completely removed.
In addition, non-dissociated colloids, gases, and organic contaminants are reduced to extremely low levels.

Modern UPW preparation systems integrate multiple technologies, including pre-treatment, electrodialysis (EDI), ultraviolet sterilization, reverse osmosis (RO), ion exchange, and membrane filtration. The overall process can generally be divided into three stages: pre-treatment, desalination, and fine filtration.

1. Pre-treatment:
Includes multi-media filtration, activated carbon filtration, and softening processes to remove suspended particles (typically 1–20 μm), organic matter, and residual chlorine.

2. Desalination:
Includes reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis (EDI), and related processes to remove dissolved ions from water.
For example, EDI systems can achieve up to 95% ion removal, while RO systems can remove approximately 98% of ions and over 99% of bacteria and organic contaminants.

3. Fine Filtration:
Designed to remove residual fine particles and prevent contamination from resin fragments or pipeline corrosion. High-precision filtration (e.g., 0.1 μm) ensures the final water quality meets ultrapure standards.
